"' ' ' ; Thames, August 27. , Trenton. — A good class of country is being penetrated, in the crosscut from the Cambria, No. 4'level, and the drive is now within 50 feet of the , boundary, so that the Saxon reef should soon be to hand. The drive from the bottom of the Company's shaft has been extended a further distance of 10 feet during the past week. The country in the face to-day is a little harder than usual. Lone Hand. — This Company's mine is looking well throughout. In the Manchester section there is some excellent mineral in the ■ sixth stope where the Moa and Adelaidereefs junction, thelodohere beingls inches in thickness. Stoping is proceeding on No. 1 leader as usual, where gold is frequently observed in the quartz, while in the fourth stope on No. 1 leader gold is seen very freely. The same remarks apply to No. 2 leader, which is 2 inches in thickness^ At the low level the country is still hard, and consequently progress is rather slow. As the Moa reef is not more than 30 or 40 feet distant, however, it will not now take long to penetrate this small hard channel of country. Saxon. — In the drive at No. 5 level, hillward, the face is at present occupied by about two feet of stringers, in which gold is seen when breaking down ; while 51b or 61b of picked stone were saved yesterday. The air compressor has now been placed in position, but the JPelton wheel to drive it has nob been, attached nor connection made with; the water main. A few pounds of picked stone are also occasionally saved from here. The scopes and other workings are producing a good supply of fair crushing dirt, but are without change. Lone Hand. — The country in the General Chute drive at the low level is a trifle easier, and during the past week the contractors have extended it a further distance of 9 feet. In the eastern the reef averages 12 inches in thickness, and shows a little gold with several hauls of picked stone. No. 1. main reef looks promising. The amalgam on hand for the week totals 4530z. New Moanataiari. — The crushing still continues to improve. A little more gold was seen yesterday in the small stringer in main cross-cut No. 4 level, coastwise end.
