A Tortoise Which Outlived Eight Archbishops.
The Primate recently gave the second of a series of four garden parties at Lambeth Palace. This, year His Grace has extended the borders and lengthened the stakes of these Lambeth social gatherings by inviting the clergy and the r families, with the result) 1 ' that considerably over 1,000 visitors- grace the Palace lawn. J^Jusic is provided by the clever band ot the East London Industrial School, and "light refreshments" are served in the old Guard Chamber, now the principal dining-room, in which are hung the hair-loom portraits of the Archbishops of Canterbury. There was one very curious little incident at the|(pai*by. Profes&or Fluwer showed the tortoise ot Archbishop Laud, which he brought from Fulham to Lambeth when he became Ai'chbishop, and which lived 130 years, and during that time saw oue eight archbishops. It would have lived probably many years longer but lor the carelessness of the gardener, who dug it out of its hole one winter und did not find it another. Its shell had been preserved, and was in the palace, but from being much kpopked f otoouB :had lost some of its parts. ' Professor, Flower got -.the Archbishop's permission to loofs it up, and have the description, which \vas almost obliterated "by time and ill-Wage, deciphered and have it^a'dlfr'und&r k"sla«s >case,' wit.h > itß> history' p^rojWriry 'terigycajved on a silver, plate. , 'The tojctoise.aft Peterborough Cathedral wap a; t stilt roor.e, wonderful one even than its Lambeth brother, for it was known to be over one hundred and eighty years old when it died, also from an accident, and Bishop Jeune had its shell preserved, with an inscription narrating its age and history.-
