COROMANDEL NEWS.
TIKI. Most of the claims about the Tiki district are getting more or less gold, but there is nothing of special importance to publish in connection with any of them. As soon as the .Emily battery starts, which will probably be about Wednesday next, the Colleen Bawn claim will put through a large parcel. Parcels from three different parts of the Edith claim will also be crushed at the same battery as soon as the stuff can be got down.
KUAOTUNU. Favourable accounts continue to be received from the Kuaotunu field. Everyone who has seen the show of gold in the low level of the Try-fluke claim (Kawhine's) expresses the opinion that it is the grandest thing that has been seen anywhere on the Haui'aki goldfields for a long time — the reef being very large and showing more or less gold in every piece broken out. Kuaotunu is not, however, so far. a specimen locality, afc least not what would be considered as specimens from the small leaders about Coromandel, although there can bebub little doubt that claims such as Kawhine's — where there are large reefs with gold distributed through the stone — are better both for the working-man and capitalist, as they give more labour aud ensure a profitable average' return. Two pieces of quartz, showing very freely throughout, from Kawhine's low level, which were brought over by the County Chairman, have been on view in the local Bank during the week, and have attracted great notice from a very large number of practical miners, who one and all pronounce the show of gold as really Al. Jtjst-ix-Time (the adjoining claim to the Prospector's(Peebles') — A drive is being put in to cut two 2ft reefs which, outcrop ; in driving, a reef about 18in in width, showing gold, has been cut. The prospects of the claim are very good, and the work of opening up the mine systematically is being pushed on. Makiposa. — P. Hayes and party have cut a fine reef, about 3ft. in width, showing good prospects. Several of the other claims are pushing on with work -with as much despatch as possible, but the weather has been very much against everyone. As soon as the fine weather, sets in there will be a number of the claims employing more men and carrying on more extensive operations.
OTAMA. Maori Dream. — A contract; is to be let for putting in a low level to cut the reef in the tipper workings from which a parcel of stuff was crushed a short time ago, and which gave a good return. It is expected that about 100 ft of driving will intersect the reef.
Thames, August 21 Singapore (Tararu). — The low level is being pushed ahead to intersect the reef in which gold was discovered on the surface. The country is rather hard, and consequently progress is somewhat slow. Lone Hand. — The stopes in the City of Manchester and Lone Hand sections of the mine continue to produce quartz of excellent grade, dabs and colours of gold being invariably seen when breaking down. In the low level, the contractors are still in rather a tight class of country, but the Moa reef should be to hand in another 25ft. or 30ft. of driving. Cambria. — Crushing is nearly completed. May Queen. — This Company's mine is now attracting some notice, the windingengine being in working order. The work oi cleaning out and repairing the shaft is tt be pushed ahead with all possible expedition, after which a start will be made to open out on some of the reefs that are known to traverse the property. The general opinion amongst mining men "\/ho are conversant with this ground, and worked on it in the early days of the goldfield, is that gold will be got at no very great distance from the shaft. Saxon. — The return of 410oz retorted gold telegraphed yesterday was reduced on melting to 4020z 15dwts. It is the product of 615 loads quartz and 651b picked stone. Cambria. — A small two-inch leader in the big main reef, above No. 3 level, has just been cut, and looks very promising for gold. Gold has been freely seen when breaking down No. 7 leader, and a few pounds of picked stone were saved. Gold is also seen when breaking down quartz in the leading stope over the western drive. Lone Hand. — The country in the General Chute drive, low level, is very tight. The leader in the 1 face of the fourth stope is 3 inches thick, and shows nice mineral. Four lbs. picked stone are. to hand from the tourth stope west, and five lbs from the drive west on the No. 2 leader. Nice-looking mineral is seen through the quartz in the Adelaide and Moa reefs. Good mineral is seen through the seventh stope quartz, and colours are showing in the Bth stope. Caledonian. — The crushing from No. 1 reef at No. 1 level continues to show up. The reef is from 4 to 5 feet thick, in a very good channel of country, and contains some excellent minerals. About 45 loads have been crushed to date, and there is on hand 6oz hard squeesed amalgam from this source. The drive in Brown's leader from the bottom of flat winze is still being ' pushed forward. No reef has been broken for the vveek to allow of the trial from No. 1 level, but about 16 feet has been stripped and will be broken down during the present week. The country here is inte-r sected by good looking mineral seams in favourable sandstone. About 10 loads* of quartz from other parts of the mine have been put through the battery during the week, but it is of a rery low grade. gJS£*l
