ARREST OF F. O. DEAN. LATE THAMES BOROUGH CLERK.

F. C.Dkan has been captnred, and arrived at Auckland in charge of Detective Herbert on Thursday, via Sydney, by the B.s. Hauroto. He was apprehended ut Norfolk Island, und taken thence by steamer to Sydney, It appears that when he escaped from Thames he was placed aboard the schooner Christine, off Omaha, by the two Itoltons at 2 a.m. on Sunday, the 14th July, and reached Norfolk Island Friday, but a very heavy gale cotping on the vessel drifted, and had to put out to sea, after Captain John McLiver and some of the passengers hud gone ashore, The Southern Crosa with Detective Herbert on boaid reached Norfolk Island the following morning (Saturday), but owing to the forco of the gale could not land her pasßengern, The Christine did not return for a week, having been blown fully seventy miles out to sen, Detective Herbert, on the return of the Christine to Norfolk Ibland, hired a boat

and went aboard and at once arrested Dean, who was travelling as a prient under the HRfiumod name of Rev J. Davis. When arrested he became greatly depressed. He had not takon Captain McLiver into his confidence, but Detective Herbert did not know this, and paused a very anxious week, during the absence of the Christine, thinking it likely McLiver wonld signal to the Christine to keep away or go to Noumea. As the Southern Cross had left, Herbert and Deun wont od to Noumea in the Christine, just catching the Fiji mail boat to Sydney. A cable was left for transmission, but owing to the line being down it never reached the authorities at Auckland. It is eaid if the Southern Cross had not made a very quick trip it is probable that the Christine's passengers would have been landed, and the vessel resumed her voyage for Noumea. Dean had about L7O in cash on him when arrested. He wan known to the passengers of the Christine as father Davies, n Roman Catholio priest, bound for New Caledonia to take charge of mission work there. He was brought up at the Auckland Police Court on Thursday on several charges of embezzlement, and remanded to Thames, where he arrived in charge of Detective Herbert, by s.a. Rotomabana, the name afternoon . , The news of his arrest oaused great exoitament at Thames, and tho greatest I HurpriHe was expressed at th« capture, as the v.vnen\\ impression appeared to be that j Dean would succeed in escaping.

On Thursday afternoon Crick was arrested on a warrant issued under the hand of the Sheriff of the Supreme Court, for not having paid tho sum of LI 16 17s 6d, bein£ LlOO on account of Dean's bond, and Ll6 17s 6d costH incurred in connec tion therewith up to date. He was lodged in the Crrahamstown lock-up, and has since been sent to Auckland Gaol.
