The Largest Elephant Ever Killed in India.
The 'Madras Mail' reports that some bime last year a solitary male elephant which had killed two nieu, and was a source of terror to the neighbourhood, was pursued and killed in a lalook- of the South Arcot district. On hearing ,o£ this an official oi the Central Museum of Madras repaired to the place to secure the skeleton, bub did no'j reach it until after tho body had been buried. Orders wore then given to exhume Che bones and send them to Madras. This was done, aud the skeleton, on bein.e: mounted, was found to bo lOic. 6in. high. The principal authority on the I .subjept, Mr S.aunde.vson, in > ' Thirteen Years Among the Wild <Beasts of India,' bays that out of hundreds pf elephants ( measured in the flesh he never found one to exceed 9fb. 10in., or Sin. less than the Madras skeleton. The tusks are 6ft. along I the curve, and weigh 50lb each.
