COAL MONOPOLYWellington, August 5.
li< lobby reports are to be credited, the cvi* dence taken by the Committee which is now inquiring into the affairs of the West Coast coalfields will reveal sume startling facts when it comes to be laid before the House. Ifc is alleged to have been proved that all the mines from which our main supply of coal is procured are practically in the hands of a single company, and the holders have already been able to regulate the market in any way they please. Further, it is asserted that all the properties have been le e t by the Government on very long leases, ranging up to 66 and 99 yeai-s, so that the only hope of obtaining" an independent supply, which would tend to keep the monopolists within reasonable bounds, lies in the discovery of new and extensive coal measures, and the development of a few large ones yet untouched. The Committeeis still examining witnesses, and it is likely to continue doing so for some time to come. Itsreportshould be one of unusual interest.
