MEETING AT CHRISTOHURCH. Christchurch, July 27.
An immense audience attended the meeting convened by the Mayor in the Oddfellows' Hall to-night to discuss the proposed Representation Bill. Mr Lewisoon (Mayor) denounced the provisions of the Bill as submitted. An apology was read from Mr John Holmes, who expressed his entire sympathy with the object of the meeting. ilr Hobbs moved, " That this meeting most .sti'ongly and emphatically epters its protest against the provisions of the B.epresentation Bill now beforo Parliament, and insists that representation should bo on the population basis as hitherto, and regrets fchab any attempt should bo made by country members to depart from this principle ; and further considors that tho present quota of 18 per cent, in tavour of the country districts is more than sufficient."
Mr John L. Scott seconded. MrC. M. Gray then moved, "That the sincere and hearty thanks of this meeting be tendered to the members of the House of Representatives who have taken so noble and determined a stand against the proposal to alter the present iair and reasonable basis of representation." Mr H. Thomson seconded, suggesting that the names "of Mr Richard Reeves and Mr Marchant should bo singled out ior special commendation. The Mayor was requested to forward the resolutions to the Premier and members for (Jhristchurch.
