GAS COMPANIES.

Mr Perceval asked the Premier yesberday whether the Government propose this session to bring in a Bill providing for the following : — i. The fixing of a maximum dividend to be paid by gas companies 2. The annual inspection by an independent auditor ot the balance-sheets and books of the Gas Company. 3. The abolition of meter ient&. 4. The testing of the quality of the gas. Sir H. Atkinson admitted thab the present state of the Jaw as regards gas companies is unsatisfactory. The Government had the matter under consideration, but it would be quite impossible to deal with the question this session. They were considering legislation on the subject, and hoped to make a proposal some other time.
