PECULIAR LAW.

I The following is the question pufc fco the Minister of Lands by Mr Valentine yesterday on the subject of encroachments on roads by rivers, about which I wired early in the week : — If ho is aware that, in accordance with the Road Hoards Act, 1882, and the Public Works Act, 1882, a decision was given in the Supieme Court at Auckland to the effect that if a property on a river bank is separated from the river by a road line, and such road line is gradually deroaded by the natural action ot such river, tho local body can, without" compensation, take a now roadline off such property, and continue to do so as often as necessary till the whole of the land is gone, while the owner of such property is not entitled to any land which may be formed by the river, and is legally powerless to prevent the encroachment from which the law ordains that he must suffer the loss of his property? If so, will the Minister introduce this session a mea&ure to remedy such a state ot tho law? The Minister replied that he vag nob aware that such was tho law. It was a big question, and he- was afiaid if the law was asindicated, Government would not this session be able to bring in a measure on the lines suggested by the hon. gentleman.
