FEMALE PROTECTION.

Sir John Hall has presented a very largely signed petition from the residents of Chrisbchurch praying that the age of consent for females should be raised from 13 to 16 years, as in the mother countryand other colonies, as for instance South Austialia. Sir J. Hall also presented another largely-signed petition from Chi'istchurch asking to have the Industrial Schools Act extended to take in young persons to at least 16 if not 17, making provision that any child up to that age found living with persons having no visible lawful means of support, or with common prostitutes, whether such persons are parents or guardians or not, may be brought before the magistrate with a view to their committal to an Industrial School to the age of 21 years. At present the Act cannot be brought into operation after the children have reached the age of 15 years.
