Yesterday the following motion which he had tabled some time back camo up, but was adjourned until next Tuesday by 42 to 24, on the motion of the Minister of Public Works: "That whereas a Royal Commissioner has reported that the Governor of this colony has acted wrongly in taking by proclamation, under the pretext of requiring ib, for public works, land

which was never intended to be used for such a purpose, bat had been already bargained to a private person, in order to save a few hundred pounds on a compeneation claim, this House is of opinion that the Attorney-General should be instructed to obtain a decision of the Supreme Court as to (1) whether such land as was not required for public works, and which was never intended to be used for such a purpose but had already been bargained to a piivate person, was or could have been taken from a private owner under tho pretext that it had been taken under the authority of a proclamation authorising the Governor to take land for public works and for no other purposo ; or (2) whether such proclamation was of no effect in relation to any land included in it nob requhed for public purposes."
