NIGHT THOUGHTS.

Tick ok. my watch, the steady beat Like echoes of Time's flying feet. Like distant knell ot dying hours, Like vrater drip that rock devours. Beat on, oh heart, like muffled oar > That moves Life's bark to that far shore From whence a path of light to me > Streams forth across Life's gloomy sea. Not mine, thank God, their darker lot Whom this bright beacon reaches not, Whose life-ship threads the murky d ~kf, With only one 'small masthead light.' Who, driven by resistless gal 6 Far from the ancient landmark's sail, And dim discern' mid wild winds' roar/ The breakers moan on rocky sh«re, i And fain would cast, like Paul of old, An anchor by the stern to hold, And so await without dismay The dawning of a coming day. Oh, Saviour! touch these eves that strain For arlimp3e ot light from Thee in vain; For them, indeed, this light from Thee " Shone never yet divland or sea." Teach such as these to look beyond The mists that human thought surrpund. Where shines afar, like Pol* StaY light, ' The ray T-bou flashest through the night. Then creed and formula may fail, Like cable parted in the gale, And lightning-given glance display The cruel rocks athirst to slay. But. bright, triumphant o'er the storm— Oh Son, of earth and heaven born— The lonely helmsman's eye can trace The course to Faith's firm resting-place. •.
