THE A.J.C. STEEPLECHASE.
When the Australian Jockey Club determined to raise the steeplechase jumps at Ranchvick to a uniform height of four feet each the opinion was freely expressed in Sydney that the Club were making an erroi*. So it proved at the initial contest last Saturday. The cable tells us the big cross-country race was a " chapter of accidents," Pecer Osbeek and Graf ton being the only two who stood up out of the ten starters. Although I should like to have chronicled the succebS of one of the Auckland horses who were ?ent over, still it is gratifying to hear of Peter Osbeek being led-in the winner, and it is certain the old grey received more than one hearty cheer from the small army of ex-Aucklanderspret-ent,whohave oflate cast their lot in Sydney. On the score of weight, Shillelagh, Artist and Don had nothing to complain of, but it only goes to show that taking horses to Australia is not all " beer and skittles."
