SALVATION ARMY.
The following question which Mr Seddon will ask the Minister ot Justice is of particular interest to those who support the Salvation Army :— (1) Whether he is aware that only Thursday last a number of Salvationists were put into gaol at Napier ior the offence of walking in proce&sion in the public streets of Hastings. (2) Will the AlinivSter take the opinion of the Crown law officers as to whether the imprisonment is legal, and as to whether the by-laws of local authorities decreeing imprisonment for non-payment of fines for this class •f offeuces are not ultra vire? ? If the imprisonment is illegal or the by-laws ultra vires, will the Minister notify Resident Magistrates and Justices of the Peace to act accordingly ? (4) If it is found that imprisonment is legal and the by-laws are upheld, will the Minister at once bring in a measure repealing such by laws, and in furtherance of religious toleration and freedom ?
