THE TRUNK RAILWAY.
The Ministerial organ this morning says : — "It is rumoured that some of the surveys for the central route of the North Island trunk railway havo given less favourable results than were anticipated, and that consequently the Northern members are more sanguine of carrying their point. The distance from Stratford to the tmin,el is 116 miles, and from Stiatford to the point of divergence at Matata 103 miles. The cost of making a road to Matata would be £74,000, and this t>»e Northern members are pressing to have done, in addition to spending £100,000 upon making the line to the tunnel ; in the purchase of native lands 1200,000 is wanted.
