ESCAPES FROM PRISON.
There are probably many people in ffe e colony who havo an impression (like M r W. P. Reeves, who mildly chatted the Government on the subject yesterday) that the number of escapes last year was unprecedently laige. The Minister of Justice, in reply to Mr Reeves' question as K> what* was the usual number, said that in 18S1 there was one escape*; in 1882 there were six ; in 1883, one ; ISB4, two ; 1885, nine ; 1886, four ; 18S7, three ; ISBB, seven. Soveral of these, he explained, weie only out for an hour, or even less.
