SIXTEEN TRUNKS AND NO MONEY.

With considerable emotion she went on : "My husband sold all my effects— l 6 trunks containing my wedding presents, jewellery and clothing." As the lady was explaining how badly she was treated Justice Butt said that he could not understand how she could have been left without means to support a dying child when she had 16 trunks of jewellery and wedding presents in her possession. She said that no money was left her to live upon. The Justice said that she had already stated that her husband had abandoned his position on the "Daily Telegraph," yielding him an income of £1,000 a year. Perhaps that accounted for his want of mone}'. She went on to explain that she was cruelly tieated, which testimony, under the ruling of the Court, could not be considered. Then the Justice told her to call her witnesses, if she had any. During all this time, while spectators were smiling and ci aning their necks by turns at 'the conversation between the lady and the Justice, the distinguished white-wigged barristers were as grave a& the marble statues in the British Museum.
