Football Match. LOCAL TEAM v. KATIKATI.
(From onr own Correspondent) The return football match between a combined Te Aroha-Waiorongomai team v. K^tikati, came off on Saturday last, in Mr Jansen's paddock, Waiorongomai, kindly lent for the occasion. The following were the players :— Te Aroha-Wflioirongom.»i : Full back, Goldswortby 5 three>quarter backs, W. and T. Biggs, and McOonnel ; halfbacks, D,. Craig, J. darken, X- Clarken ; forwards, A. Samson j E. Roberts jT. Cahill ;J. Lynch j M. O'Qonnor ; S. McGregor ;- J. Irwin j F. Margetts. .Katikatii: Full Back, Anderson ;. three- , .quarter backs, T. and C. Ansley ; halfbacks, Rawlins and Foley ? ; forwards, fßlakeney ? Johnson ; F. B^ Anderson ; ;' Gledstanes ; G. Y. Stewart, junr. ; H. ['StWast ; E. Keiler ;, nrid M. J. Stewart. 1 Katikati won the toss, and T. Ansley I kicked off. Play was almost at once , carried into, the Katikatit twenty- fire, and ,. inside th.c first fiv,e xninutea T. , 01aift$i* succeeded in securing a touch down. The place kick was entrusted to T. Bgiggs,, who, however, failed to score.. Play was resumed in a most, determined manner, and continued dangerously near the Katikati; goal line, and within the second ftve minutes J, (darken sectu«d another ipj }• the kick w*a this time entrusted to T. OA»rken, wha did $ot succeed in scoring.. For tb* remainder of the spell play was. both f*flt a*d furioas, but nofurtber^ scoriag took place. During the spell "Mx Craig «ado-a. deter* mined attempt to get away with the- ball but waa co.lared. The Katikati representatives played well, especially T. Ansley, Anderson, and Keiler, but I think the last named was very often off side. After a rest.of about five minutes, play was, resumed by Te Arolia picking off, and almost at once the play was carrie 1 into, the Katikati g.rom^i,and throughout this spell the tisitora had to play a defensive, game, getting no. chance to scoro themselves, it being as much as they could do to, protect their- goal line. During this spell J. Lync'i secured a touch down, the place kick heing giren T. Clarken, but wa,s a, failurn. After piny resumed T. Cahjll obtained another try, which was once more entrusted to T. Clarken, but no score resulted. VV. Biggs also secured a tryy which, however, did not eventuate in a scar*. resulted in an easy victory for the horn* team ; as when time was called the score stood as follows ; — Te Aroha-Waioron-gomai, 5 pointi ; Katifcati, nil. A strong wind was blowing daring th« afternoon, which oftsn carried the ball in any direction tat that wished for, the wind blowing right across between the goals. The ground,, was also v.cry wet, i water lying in the hollows all over the ground, which did not tend to add to the comfort of the players who got rolled about in it, and also made the ball un- | pleasantly slippery. The Katikati team | (as shown by list of players given above) were two men short, and playing with only 13, which, of course, greatly handicapped them, and lessened whatever chance they might have had with a full complement of players. Toe visitors were entertained by the combined team to dinner at Smardon's Hotel, and spent a pleasant evening together ; several toasts being given, and songs rendered by members of the Cona-
