AN AUSTRALIAN OPINION ON THE V.R.C. DERBY.

Referring to the nexfe contest for the Victorian Derby, " Warrior" writes :—"I: — "I have always argued that firai-elass two-year-old perfoimeis, with few exceptions, can never get Qver a mile and a-half of ground with 8 10 up when only rising three years old. In naming a dozen Derby candidates, I intend passing by Richelieu, Montalto, Necklet, Spice, Vera, Sinecure, and Rudolph. The last two I wouldn't have at any price, for out of the three andthirty Melbourne Derbys since 1857 only one of them has been appiopriated by a gelding. At present, with the 1889 entries in front of me, I caunot see anything better than the Hon. James White's bay colt Singapore, by Martini-Henry — Malacca ; Dreadnought, by Chester — Trafalgar; Savanak, by St. Albans— Sea Spray ; Copenhagen, by St. Albans — Petrea ; Silvermere, by The Assyrian — Silver; hrcaH ; Carrington, by Gang Forward — Josephine ; Little Bob.by St. Albans — Queen Mary: Priam, by Richmond — Footstep; Merriment,byGoldsbrough— Happy Thought; Gasparone, by Neckersgat — Queen of Naples ; Sydney, by Maribyrnong — Blue and White ; and Traveller, by Cheviot — Lady Elizaboth.
