REPRESENTATION BILL.

Wellington, July 5. Rumour lias it that the Representation Bill will be withdrawn, but the Government organ states that the second reading will be pressed for, and will be carried. This is based upon the supposition that many of the members now opposing the Bill are willing to vote for a second reading to affirm the principle of the necessity for the reform of the electoral laws. It is rumoured that in the event of the country members persisting in the effort to obtain 33J per cent, instead of IS, and refusing to accept a compromise, there may be some stonewalling, as the town members will fight the matter out to the bitter end. The Premier, Sir John Hall, and Mr Saunders are to make exhaustive speeches for the Government on the Representation Bill, and probably the Opposition will have something further to say.

Fond mother : My dear, I do not think you should wear that ring upon your lefb hand ; people will be asking if you are engaped. Amorous daughter :' Well, mamma, if they should, I could reply, " No, butj'm open to be !" Mrs Hondricks — Bertie, your mother is calling you. Bortie Teaser— Yes'm, I know it. But 1 guess sho don't want me very bad. ' Mrs Hendricks — She's called you seven times already. Bertie Teaser— Y t es, 1 know; but she hasn't yelled "Albert" yet.
