NORTH ISLAND RAILWAY.

Wellington, July 8. TirERE was a rumour around the lobbies this morning that the Government will try and divert £70,000 of the North Island trunk loan to form a road from Stratford to the end of the railway at the Waikato. There is no foundation for this reporD, it being a reflex of the statement made by the Premier to the Northern deputation" the other day, that it would cost that sum to make such a road in addition to £100,000 for the completion of the railway to the tunnel. If bhey cannot get what they are now striving for, the Northern members may be glad to take £70,000 for such a road.
