PROPERTY TAX BILL.

The Act to further amend the law regulating the assossmont of real and personal _ pvorjerby for the purposes of taxation has now been circulated. It exempts machinery in actual use trom the tax, and provides for the abatement or remission of the tax in certain cases where the collection would cause hardship. Provision is made for a new assessment of real property on the application of the owner or Commissioner. The Commissioner is not to furnish the local bodies with the triennial valuation rolls, but only amended pai-fciculars. Local bodies are to be empowered to add to and alter the rolls accordingly. Buildings unoccupied for six months from the payment of the tax are exempted. Companies bon owing money from persons nob resident in the colony are deemed to be the owners of such money and no deductions or exemptions aro to be allowed to debenture holders in such cases.

Applications fox- space for the Dunediu Exhibition practically closed yesterday, though all the returns are not yet to hand. So far as the results arc to hand the space applied for is as follows :— Auckland (private exhibition only), 317 feet ; Napier, 560 feet ; Wanganui, no return yet ; Wellington (private exhibitors) 360 feet ; Westland, 100 feet ; Weatport, 540 ; Grey mouth 540 ; Hokitika, 540 ; Reefton, 180 • Blenheim (private exhibitors), 29 feet ; Nelson, 1,080 teet; Canterbury, 4,000 feefc ; Otago and Southland, 27,900 feet. The total for the colony so far is 36,246 feet or 202 bays. Australia (private exhibitors), no returns to hand from agents ; Tasmania, 800 feet : Great Britain and foreign countries (private exhibitors), 6,179 feet. No allowance is made for space for passages, 30 that the actual space required will be much more when the official returns irom Australia and British and foreign agents as well as the local committee come to hand. It is expected that large additions to the buildings, which are alroady designed to cover over seven acre?, will bo required.
