ATHLETICS. By Action in the " Auckland Star."
W. Kennedy on the 25^ yards won the sixth Carringfcon Handicap. E. M. Bobard on fche 26£ yards won the last Botany Handicap. He beat L. Murray, who was second, by a few inches. The record for the 1,000 yards was broken on April Bth by Pollock Hill, at the Merton College sports, Oxford. Hill was opposed by Cross, the half-mile Amateur Champion, and P. R. Lloyd. The lastnamed led for rather over a quarter of a mile, and then retired. Cross after this showed the way into the straight, but Hill soon drew level, and for the* next sixty yards they ran -shoulder to shoulder, then he gradually left Cross, and finishing with a rare dash, beat him by 16yds in 2min 15 4-sthsocs, \vhichis2-sbhsofa second faster than the record established by W. G. George in 1882, and taking: into consideration that the path was heavy ground, Pollock Hill's performance is all the more remarkable. Although beating both the amateur and professional records, Pollock Hill's time is 2 4-sth sec. behind the American record of 2rain. 13sec. credited to the ex-amateur, L. E. Meyers. At the Cambridge University Sports, the 600 yards recoid was also broken on April 17th by H. C. L. Tindall, who won by three yards in the time of lmin. 12sec. An interesting race took place on April 3rd, in London, between Messrs J. Andwell and T. Hennessey, for a handsome cup. The former had to drive a bicycle loaded with a half-hundred weight a mile against Mr Hcnnessey t running the distance. The ped was quickest away, and after a good race won by 18 yai-ds. A special cable to a Sydney paper says :—: — It is probable that, owing to M'Auliffe's easy win over Tom Lee?, of Australia, in San Francisco for 350 soys, another match will be made between M'Auliffe and Peter Jackson, the champion boxsr of Australia. M'Aulifie states that he is not satisfied with the result of the previous match, in which he received such a thrashing, and thinks that if he can meet Jackson again at an early date his improved condition and increased knowledge ot Jackson's tactics will enable him to secure a win. C. Linden, brother to Jack Pickering, of Auckland, was beaten in the first round of the Cavrington Sixth Consultation Handicap. The heat was won by Hoel&cher, 26j yards. Linden wa« on the 25th yard mark, and was put back a yard. From Melbourne I hear that Boyle is arranging for another Australian ciicketing team to visit England next year. The great Muidoch is spoken of as its probable captain. A number of the athletic friends of the late Mick Ryan, who belonged to the A.A.A. and C. Club and Selwyn Football Club, have had erected overhisgravea handsome tombstone and an iron fence. In the running for the Carrington June Handicap, twopeds., Messrs. Maxwell and VV. Wright, were each disqualified for six month's for unsatisfactory running. I would give local peds. a final reminder that entries for the firstZealandiaHandicap close this evening. A prize fight lasting over an hour and a quarter took place on April 18th, near London, between the two well-known boxers, Alf. Mitchell and Alf. Ball, the stakes being a purse of £200. In addition to the principals " and their attendants, about 50 persons were present. Desperate fighting was the order from the first, each appearing at different rounds to have the advantage. In the fifty-fifth round, however, Ball broke his lett arm, but came up manfully, only to be severely punished until round 64, when after repeated entreaties ho gave up after fighting 1 hour 18 minutes.
