Aliici, for residence site No. 87, Lipsey's Block, Te Aroha. Granted. Application for Tunnel : Peter Fer#nsson, on behalf of the Fergusson Syndicate, for a tnnnel throusrh the Ophia claim, Waiorongomai. No appearance of applicant. Struck ouft, Application for Road : J. H. Emett, Waiorongomai. Referred to Inspector of Mince to report on. Hearing adjourned to July 23rd. Application for Protection : J. Squirrel for pormission to work the Oceana Licenspd Holding, 15 acres, Waiorongomai, with two men far three months. Granted to September 17th. Application for- Timber License : J. H. Emett, for renewal of timber license, to cat timber on the Thames High School Endowment, Waiorongomai. The applicant in this case, J. H. Eraett, asked the Warden if he would afford him any protection during the next twelve njonths with respect to the cutting of firewood. During the currency of his license just expired, people had been cutting and selling timber all round hiip, without having taken out a timber license, and he thought it was Very hard on a poor man in his position, who was trying to earn a living, that he should have to pay £6 a year for a timber license-, - and Be in no way pro tected after doing so. Many personsat Wiiiorongomai had, he thought, been given to understand, or at any rate appeared to be under the impression, that they could gonhd cut firewood and dispose of iji without taking out a timber license.

, The Warden : Why don't you lay au information against those vs\o do so ? . Emett : I have 9npken to Mr Wilson, the Inspector, about it two or three times, but he appears to have a great deal of other work to do, and I suppose cannot spare time to attend to the matter. The Warden : Send a letter to me, and I will see that it is attended to. Emett : I would like to know if a man with a Miner's .Right can cut firewood for other people. The Warden : -I have no doubt it was never contemplated they should do so in the way you state. A" man not possesing a miner's right certainly has no right to sell firewood to another. But a man may be at work in the mines himself, and another be out of work, and he may employ tlie one out of work to go and cat some firewood for him for his own nse, instead of losing the time to go himself, and in such a case I do not see that a wrong is done anyone ; but he has no right to sell it to another. • Emett : : Men are in tho habit of going round from one to another (not being the holders ©f a timbor license), and asking them \l, they want any firewood cot ; and I think if I have to pay for a license to cut timber I should receive some protection. The Warden : Mr Wilson is the proper pet son to lay your complaint with. For the future, if you find anyone cutting and disposing of timber without a license inform Mr Wilson the Insp ctor, and he will take proceedings against them. License granted.
