TAR A RU— THAMES. (From a Correspondent).
Nympth and Mermaid : These licensed holdings (now amalgamated) contain 57 acres, and are owned principally by Messrs Lavery, Hetherington, Cannell, and Roberts, of Te Aroba; the other shareholders being Messrs Lowrie Bros, and Buckley (Thames). The reefs contained in these claims were discovered three or four months ago by the Messrs Lowrie and Buckley, when prospecting on their own account. Systematic work has now been in progress about six weeks. The find is in a portion of the gold field upon which but little prospecting appears to have beea carried on, as compared with the rest of the field. The claims are situated right at the top of tho range, and very difficult of access as at present, but a track could be cut to connect with the road that runs along the foot of the ran»e, at a small outlay, the distance being ouly about a mile ; and we understand the County Council have been asked to have this track cut., and that the County Engineer has been instructed to inspect and report on probable cost, etc. It bejng impossible at present to convey
quartz ,to the , flat , (except py-jcarryingroii^^ j the - back), ;the Warden has granted Ithe.v j owners i/three- months', protection: idlvfpiky ; • the, ground , with four men. So far three; ,3 well defined reefs have been "discovered, and a little work donef upon each ;rsuffi--cient,_ however, to show that each reef carries good gold from wall J;ol walll , , A. - winze has already, been sank to a depth of 40ft,, on what is known as the specimen leader, which averages two inches in width, and from, this some reallysplendid stone has been procured. The winze carries gold the whole depth, and the show is as good at the .bpttorn of the ■ winz3 as it has been in any portion of it. - 2£lb of specimens, obtained principally from the main reef, and lodged in ihe Bank N.Z., Thames, have attracted much attention. Speaking generally the prospects of these claims are, exceedingly good, and the operations now in progress are being watched with great, interest. The proprietors have secured,an excellent battery site ; also water-race, with ample supply of motive power. The following claims have been taken up by Te Aroha residents, adjoining the Prospectors ground^ via;, on the south, 25 acres (New Find), by Messrs Ebert and ; party ; on the north, 25 acres (Golden reef), by Messrs Blencowe and party ; on the north (alongside the Golden ~ Reef), 10 acres (Imperial Treasury), by Messrs Harris, Itowe, Bew, and others. Two men are engaged prospecting on each of these claims. The two main reefs in the Prospectors claim run due N. and S., and the adjoining claims are well situated, with every prospect of the reefs being found in them also.
