SAN FRANCISCO MAIL. FORTNIGHTLY SERVICE. Wellington, June 18.
Ministers have decided not to permit any forecast of the Governor's speech to be published this year, in accordance with the custom of the past few sessions, but the Premier informs me that the speech shall be placed on the wires earlier than usual tomorrow afternoon. A deal of correspondence re the San Francisco mail service has passed between Mr Creighton and the PostmasterGeneral ; but the Government have not yet arrived at any decision on the matter. Mr Creighton is sanguine that he can induce the American Government to grant a subsidy of forty thousand per annum towards a quick fortnightly service, provided the Australian Governments will give a similar amount. The New Zealand Government are prepared to ask the House to renew the service if these subsidies are forthcoming', as a cheap and inexpensive service would then be provided. As a result of the Ministerial inspection of the Otago Central Railway during the recess, the Government are prepared torecommend that the line be constructed forthwith out of revenue for some distance. What that exact point is Ministers refuse to say, pending making the Public Works Statement ; but an Otago member of the Cabinet assures me that the Government proposals on this head will prove satisfactory to the people of Otago.
