TERRIBLE FLOODS IN VICTORIA.
jDiSASTiipus floods are prevalent in. several iparts of '"Victoria." In the, ' Sandhurst district great damage has , feee'n ' done. r The heavy ,rains,during the past two days/ also culminated in ,a destructive flood in 1 the Guildford and Newstead districts. Barker's Creek is running a banker. The water was 4ft high in several houses in Giuldford. ' Crops and fencing have been washed away, while grazing land has been covered with a hoavy deposib of mud. Enormous damage has been done by floods in the Tarnagulla district. At Eddington tho bridge over the Loddon is 3ft under water. At Laancoorie and Nowbridge^the water is just over tho decking' of the bridges. Two pumping engines have toppled over into the , temporary bye-wash. The sawmill in connection with the works H submerged, and 30,000 feet of sawn timber has been carried away. Two pile drivers and a lot of wheelbarrows have also been washed away. The flood at Tarnagulla is six feet higher than the flood of 1870, and t^he water is within three feet of a cement shed containing £3,000 worth of Portland cement. At Newbridge the inhabitants have been compelled to leave their homes. Mr Hart had 300 sheep washed away. The water is now receding slowly. "Ai Maryborough a torrent half a mile wide is flowing past the town hall ; but it is now subsiding. No loss of life has been reported ; but tbe damage done is extensive. A flood is also reported from Eallarat, and much damage has been done in the low-lying parts of the country. The Avoca district has also been visited by a flood. A lot ot fencing from the park and the public baths have been washed away. The White Lead Creek at Seymour overflowed itb banks on Thursday, and part ot the town is under water, The Chinese gardens were completely destroyed. All the growing crops along the creek have been swept away. Heavy rains are reported from all over the colony. A landslip occurred on the Sandhurst railway line on Thursday immediately north of the Ephinston Tunnel, a whole embankment having fallen on the line. Traffic was delayed for some time, but a gang of men soon cleared away the debris.
