AN AUOKLANDER ABROAD. Auckland, June 11.
Aucklanders are always ready to welcome news of the success of their fellow-citizens when they wander afar and try their luck in pastuie& new. In last evening'b issue we gave a long ptiing of ex-Auck-landers who have made their mark in California, and now we have the pleasure of recording the success of a young Auckland engineer who has made South America his home. We refer to Mr James Stewart, &on of Mr Stewart,of the well-known surveynig and civil engineering linn of Stewart and Hunter. Mr Stewart left Auckland on the 29th of November last by one of the direct pteamers for Brazil. Ho landed at Rio Janeiro, and hearing encouraging reports from Monte Video, he bent his steps there. He was not long in obtah.ing employment, and was engaged by the contractor for the constmction of a railway from Paso do los Toros northward to the Brazilian frontier. His salary was £150 per annum, but; he had not been at work a fortnight when he was given charge of the camp, displacing the district engineer, who^e salary was £400 per annum, Mr Stewarts salary taking a n&e coi responding to his position. His work gave great satisfaction and hi? abilities must have got bruited about, for some three months ago Mr Stewart was in receipt of an ofler from Mr David Angus, a railway contractor in the Argentine Republic, to accent a district engineership under him at a salary of £600 per annum, with all expenses paid. This he accepted subject to two months' notice to complete the work he was engaged upon. Mr Stewait obtainod all his expeiience upon the Rotorua Railway survey, where he was engaged for some considerable time on the pieliminary and contract surveys, and as resident engineer. He is quite a young man, and has a large number of friends in Auckland who will be glad to hear of his success: ' , Writing over to his" people, here Mr Stewait speaks of some of the country through which his line went as being very wild, as standing on end, and compares it to some of the rugged land on the Rocorua survey. He mentions a frightful thunderstorm that burst over his camp one wight. 1 The whole camp was overset, the tents blown down, while the rain came down in torrents. The brilliant flashing of the lightning, accompanied by the roar of the thunder, he could liken to nothing bother than the eruption of Tarawera, which he witnessed. Bar this, he had never seen anything like it in New Zealand. He continues : "The climate here, though very hot, is enjoyable. Sometimes wo have a cold day, the wind blowing from, the south, The storm that I mentioned, before came from the south, and,! think they are perfectly necessary."— "Auckland Star."
