A VALUABLE INVENTION. Wellington, May 10.
Amongst the patents recently applied for in New Zealand is a new plan of constructing breakwaters, groins, seawalls, roads through rivers, etc., indented by Mr John Lewthwaite, of London, formerly a Taranaki resident. The invention is now being put into practical use ut Deal, anr* as the cost of the breakwaters is reduced by sixsevenths, it is expected to prove both profitable and of great public utility. A syndicate is b6ing formed to purchase the New Zealand rights.
A young woman named Martha Ardern met with a painful accident at the Thames on Saturday. Whilst engaged trimming a hat a piece of wire she was using accidentally entered one of her eyes, and this became so inflamed that she was admitted Co hospital for treatment by Dr. Williams, who is hopeful ,of preserving the s>ight of the eye ,
