MINING NEWS. Thames, June 1.

New Alburnia.— No further breaking down of the Sons of Freedom reef has yet taken place in the drive. Saxox. — Operations in this mine aie, proceeding much the same as when last reported, and there is nob much change to report. In the seaward drive at No. 5 level what is apparently the No. 1 break has just been met with. Hillward, or eastward, the country in the drive on toe main reef is somewhat tight, and consequently the lode is pinched, being from 15 to 20 inches in thickness. It shows colours of gold, however, when broken down, and at times a few picked stones have been saved from a vein in the hangingwall. The quartzcoming to hand from the various stopes is of fair grade. As the result of a survey that has just been made of the two reefs in the surface tunnel, it is found that the lode now being worked in the stopes over No. 2 level should be a distance of 25 or 30 feet ahead, and the manager is therefore now oxtending this' drive to pick up the Saxon reef. When it is intersected a start will at once be made to sink a winze on it to connect with these stopes. Crushing is proceeding as usual with 32 head of stampers. Cambkia.— A total distance ot 25 feet has now been driven on the hangingwall leader at No. 3 level, and when breaking it down at a point beyond the " break " colours of gold were seen. The leading stopewestward has been started. Excellent mineral is observed on the quartz coming to hand from the leader in the second stope from the Darwin rise, which shows colours of gold, and occasionally yields a few picked stones. In the intermediate drive between Nos. 3 and 4 levels, the leader is 3ft. in width, and* shows strong colours of gold. New Alburnia. — The mine manager telegraphs this morning :— " Can see gold freely in the reef when breaking down this morn* ing." Si&verton. — The mine manager reports satisfactory progress. At present he is cross-cutting. He expects the reef to be 12ft thick, and so far as he has driven through it prospects well. He intends continuing the drive after cross-cuttingi being of opinion that there is better gold ahead. Trenton. — The contractors who are driving from the Company's shaft will complete their allotted distance early next week, and the manager has decided to at once let a contract for another 50ft. The country continues hard, while it is also tight in the Cambria No. 4 level crosscut. New Moanataiari.— The manager has banked 23ozs >7dwts gold from 370 tons of surface dirt. The rise on the hanging-wall leader from No. 4 level has holed through to the Cambria No. 3 level. Caledonian. —Operations afc No. 1 level have been suspended. Although there is no change in the appearance of the reef in the drive, still in the leading stope it manifests an improvement, and shows colours of gold, besides producing lib of picked atone when last broken down.
