FOOTBALL MATCH. TE AROHA-WAIORONGOMAI V-. PAEROA.
The above match was playel in Mr W, (t. Nicholls 5 paddock (kindly lent by the owner for the occasion) Paewa, on Friday last, Queen's Birthday The weather was beautifully fine, and the players nil showed up in good time on the ground ; tbe visitors travelling to Paeroa on horse j back and in buggies. Just before play
commenced a photographer, who happened to be in the district Just at the time, took several •views'of the gathering, photographing the teams separately anil afterwards together. It was agreed the game should consist of two spells of 45 minutes each, commencing at 3 p.m. Paeroa won the toss for choice of sides, ! and elected to play with the sun at their back. I The following is a list of the players : Te Aroba-Waiorongomai : — Messrs T» darken (Capfcain) ; T. Hinton ; F. Margefcts ; T. Cahill ;M. O'Connor ;J. Lynch ; J Colley * H. Hyde ; R. Samson ; W . Biggs ;W, Smith ; D. Craig ; A. Samgon * J. Paul ; I>. Morgan. Umpire, Mr J. Power Paeroa team : J. McConnell (Captain) }■ T. Quinn ; W. Hatton % W.. Grant ; M. Bein ; T. Bein ; W. Williams ; T, Cashell ; E. Dihar ; J. Dihar,. B. Hill ; W. Morgan ; F. Lipsey ; W. Houghton ;T. Clarke. Umpire, Mr G. Gape^. Referee, Mr Rhodes. Hinton, kicked off for Te Aroha, and the playquickly became of a most determined! character on both sides.. In the first, spell T. darken got a touch down for his side ; the kick being en-. trusted lo Hinton, who, however, failed to. score a goal. In the second spell Cahill secured a touch down, and the kick was again entrusted to Hinton, who quicklyconverted it into a gaol. O'Connor also* ■secured a tench down ; the ball being once more entrusted to Hinton, whosucessfully scored a second gaol. In the first spell Paeroa failed to score. In the second spell Quinn secured a touch down, but McConnall, to whomth© ball was entrusted, failed to secure at goal. Houghton also secured a touch, ■down for Paeroa, but McConnell againfailed in his effort to secure a goal ; and when time was called the gam# stood as. follows : Te Aroha- Waiorongomai, T points ; Paeroa, 2 points. Tha Paeroa. team very considerately provided a hearty dinner for their visitors, which was laid out at the All Nations Hotel £ the dining room was however far too small to be comfortable, and only allowed of about fifteen sitting down at a time.. The proceedings wound up. with a dancein the Public Hall. — Correspondent.
