BAD TO WORSE. AN AUCKLANDER'S EXPERIENCE IN SYDNEY.

An excellent draper's assistant who left Auckland a few months ago to better himself in Australia, writes to hid irienda hero in anything but a hopeful strain. Ho says :— "I promised to let you know my prospects in New South Wales. The fact is, my eflorts have proved a dead failure over since I came to Sydney. To toll you all or ercn a part of my troubles since I left New Zealand would only cause you great pain. I tried Sydney iiom day to day and from week to week in evory known place, bub could get no work at all. I was disappointed at every trial I made. At last downhearted and not knowing what to do I " raided " a little cash, and went 260iniles up the countiy bub my misfortunes went v ith me and I found trade and the chances of getting work worse than ever. Having used all my money, for the first time in my life I had to face the road and walk the 260 miles back again. I had only one bare sixpence when I started, and lay at night in my clothes, and my feet were almost bleeding, how I managed such a journey I cannot tell. Atlast got back and was livingatManley having come down to assist in a fruit shop, for which I only gob my food and lodging. I have to work even on a Sunday. I am afraid to give even this job up, unless I make up my mind to sleep "in Hyde Park in Sydney. Indeed almost death would be welcome to me at the present moment, for I can see no way out of my troubles. I am afraid I shall never get away from this. I can truly say that Sydney and Sydney people are very different to what Auckland is. Sydney is all self, and if you are starving it is no business of theirs. I should never have left New Zealand, and in particular dear old Auckland. 15
