JEWELLERY ROBBERY IN SYDNEY . £3,000 WORTH OF VALUABLES STOLEN.
Tub neighbourhood of the Pibb-strcol entrance to the Sydney Royal Arcade was the scone of unusual excitement on Tuesday of last week outside Mr Simmat's jeweller's shop. Mr Sim mat personally locked up the establishment on Monday, and on the following morning found the place in a stale of the greatest disorder, the showcases being strewn with a very large number, of jewellery cases, which had evidently been hastily stripped of their contents. Looking upwards, he observed a hole in the ceiling, which was afterwaids found to measure Sin by 13in, and it was by this aporturc that the robbers had gained access to the valuables. The jewellery that had been carried off consisted mainly of gold and silver watches, gold bracelets, scarf pins and pendants, and other such small portable articles), which were abstracted from the window casement lacing Pitt-street. The other windows facing the entrance, to the Arcade, which contained a quantity of plate were untouched, as also were the showcases around the sides of the shop, which were well filled with presentation clocks, etc. The show cases about the room containing plate, travelling clocks, and other large articles had also not been interfered with. The total -value of tho property stolen is set down at about £3,000. Upstairs, Mr Simmat learned that a quantity of burglars' property had been found, which comprised a rope, 'an umbrella, a candle,- and a few other articles.' It was scon that a small portion of the floor had been cut away, a bit having evidently been used to remove the woodwork-; the laths undernoath had been broken, and the plaster afterwards knocked away, Tho falling plaster had seemingly been caught in an umbrella which had been lowered through a small aperture made at the outset.
