WAIORONG OMAI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Waiorongomai, Thursday.

Narrow Escape : A very narrow escape from almost certain sudden death, occurred on Sunday last -to Mr Richard Bourke, who lives on the ol 1 Inverness ground in a whare, over which an old ratrt tree has been dangerously hanging for a considerable time. On Sunday while eating his dinner, the tree gave a warning crack; Bourke, whose suspicions were at once aroused, rushed out, and only just in time, for before he had got a few yards away the tree came down, crashing through the whare and demolishing it completely. On Sunday last the remains of Mr Rowland's son wire conveyed to To Aroha cemetery for interment. The uneral was very largely attended. To Aroha Silver and Gold Mining Company : Welcome nun- has at last set in, and it is to be hoped, and n»ay reasonably be expected that water for motive power will be plentiful for the remainder of the season. To-morrow a start will be made with both roasters and pans. Forty head of stampers are now quite ready for work, that is to say all the connections are complete with the cone ntrators ; but I am given to undei stand that more belting is required before the whole forty ! head can be set going. The framework in connection with the new twenty head is well underway. Footrace : A footrace has been ar-, ranged for a small stake between Mr Roberts, butcher, and Mr R. Jansen ; distance 100 yards, Mr Roberts conceding 10 yards. The race will probably take place same day as football match. Old Accident Relief Fund : A further meeting of members of the above will be held in the Public Hall here on Saturday evening next, with the object of re-forming the Association. It is much to be desired that they may come to some satisfactory arrangement with the present holders of the funds. There are many useful purposes that this money might be applied to, such for example as j a Public Library ; and 1 think it a great pity that this money is not available for some good object. It is strange the old Committee apparently cannot see their way to cause this fund to be expended in a manner beneficial to the mining community in which it was originally raised.
