MINING NEWS.
Waioi'Aiii. — The monthly crushing was completed to-day ; being 195 tons of general dirt from all parts, yielding 2380z 12dwb melfced gold. New Manukau. — Sixteen tons of quartz, being the last from Iho block on Mulligan's leader at No. 4 level, were crushed to-day for the payable yield of 260z 7dwt melted gold. Lone Hand. —Colours of gold havo been soon in the various stopes when breaking down, and theie is gcod mineral through the quartz. Cambma.— There is a splendid band of mineial showing on (he hungingwall leader No. 3 level, with overy indication of gold. Camcuoniax. — The mine manager ici ports : — "Twenty loads ot quartz havo been crushed from the intermediate level, for the return of lloz. retorted gold. This docs not include tbe picked s!oue, which us still in hand. The leet is about 2ft. thick, carrying good minerals, and showing occasional colours of gold. Twenty loads have been crushed fiom the No. 1 reef, Otago sec ion, No. 1 level ; this is poor, as only 4ozs gold resulted. The cioss leef here has been broken down, and about nine loads of quartz from it ate on the bin face. Very favourable indications arc present, but no gold has been seen. The ciushing is very hard, but may, and will probably, change when the junction of this and No. 1 reef is met with. The qnarlz crushed — about 20 loads — from No. 2 reef. No. 1 level, only averaged 2dwt to the load. Work has been discontinued here to push on the intermediate level. Loxe Hand. — it is piobable that a start will bo made in a day or two to bring in a new low level from the Adelaido main tunnel, the work having been authorised by the directors at their last meeting. Crushing operations are to be commenced at once upon the quartz now coming to hand from the upper woi king.-.. A good return is expected, as the picked stone handed over by Mr Barclay will also be treated. Nkw iMoanatajaiu. — The manager reports as follows on last week's operations :—: — '•Thedme, No. 4 level, Cambria section, has now been extended a total distance ot 48ft. fcince the course was altered. For the pact 20ft. clean, white sandstone has been gone thiough, and we are cairying about ISin. of quaitz in the back of thediive. As the course of bliia quaitz is striking too much to the south and undei lying to the south-east instead of north- west, I can haidly believe we have yet got the pioper hangingwall of the big blow of quartz, so I ha\e to-day removed the four men who arc working here and staited them to open up the drivo on tho bieak or cross hea\e of quartz at the intermediate le\el. The face of this drive is within 4 or sft ot our boundary, and by getting on the hangingwall here wo can ascertain the pioper underlie and strike of the reef, so as to be better able to determine its position at No. 4 level ; and as I before mentioned, it would bo necessary to have a winze sunk from this level down to No. 4 for tho purpose of ventilation should any extensive work be carried on at the latter level. Progress in the main ciosscut, Darwin section, id\ery slow, theieef being hard solid quartz, and very had to blast out. 1 don't expect that we will have many teet to go before getting tl rough to the hanging; wall, when we will not be loner in communicating with the winze. The two men employed in the main tunnel have now got fairly A\ell thiough the big fall, and by the end of next week we should be well forward to the bottom of the Point Russell winze. T regret to say that the surface dirt has again been shaping very poor this week. — G. S. Ciakk." Sylvia. — A body of quartz four feet •thick, supposed to be the LittlG Agnes reef, was intersected at the latter end of last week in the crosscut from the main tunnel, and on Saturday a contract was let for driving 100 ft. along its course. At the point of intersection the reef bears a promising appearance, being charged with a favourable class ot mineral, but no gold was seen. There i= still a large flow of water coming from this reef in the face of the main tunnel, but it is quite dry wheio intersected in the crosscut. CiE'M(Waiomo). — The only work in progress in thismineisthesinkingof awinzc below No. 1 level upon the leaders from which the crushing? were taken above the level. The country is lather tight at present, but the win/c has now attained a depth of about 44ft, and both leaders yield excellent prospects when tested with the pestle and j moitar.
WAIHI MINING. Waiiii Nut Claim.— Hancock and party, tiibuters in this claim, have a very nico show* in an 18 inch leader cut some time ago, which has been diiven on lor about 90 feet. A winze is now being 1 sunk fiom the diive, and some excellent stone is hcing grassed. Ihe ground round about has all been pegged off in consequence. Messrs Brook«, Co'ebrook, and others have a fair .show in an adjoining claim. Woik is proceeding as usual in the Waihi Company's ground. There havo been sc\eral cleanings up, but the ie=ult has not been allowed to transpire. The contractor for the water-race and tail race are making a great show, and have a largo number of hands on. A 700 ft diive is shoitly to be put in the mine. Silverton. — Mr E. Quinn and a small stafl are doing good work in this mine.
