GLOVE FIGHT. SMITH AND LAING BEFORE THE COURT.
Wanganui, April 25 J l
Laing and Smith, the two principals in yesterday's fight together with their seconds were this morning charged before the R.M. ■with behaving in a public place, to wit, the racecourse, in a manner calculated to provoke a breach of the peace. The case was dismissed, the R.M. holding that the racecourse was not included in the definition " public place " in the portion of the Act under which the information was laid. A second case, in which the police applied to have the men bound over to keep the peace on the ground tuab they had agreed to fight within 48 hours, was also dismissed. The articles were produced, and they expressly exempted the continuance of the fight if the police interfered.
