MINING NEWS.

Thames, April 21.

Gem.— The prospects have much improved since last report, and gold was seen treely in the stone last broken down. The country still continues a little tight. Some of the gold seen was the coarsest yet seen in the district. Norfolk. — The mine manager reports on the progress made in the various sections of this now mining property, and expresses his opinion that the Company haye a very valuable mine, the ground containing as it does so many reefs already proved to carry good patches >of gold. The ground is easy for working, and is of a sandstone nature intersected by mineral veins. May Queen.— Capital progress is being made with the cleaning out and repairing of the shaft. Trenton. — There is no change to report. The country in the face of both drives is still hard. Lone Hand. —As mentioned in Saturday's issue, lOlbs. of picked atone, of excellent quality, have been obtained as the result of the first breaking down of the Adelaide reef in the rise, Lone Hand section. The general dirt also shows colours of gold freely, and is of excellent grade. The reef in the drive will probably be taken down to-morrow. Dabs of gold continue to be seen in the Manchester stopes. Thames, April 23. Caledonian.— The mine manager reports under date 23rd April : " No. 1 reef at No. 1 level has been again broken down and a little gold seen. The crushing from this portion of your mine is not yet cleared up, but will probably shape 5 to 6dwt to the load. The contractor's new reef here has not yet been broken ; the sandstone has come in hard again, but is otherwise very good. At the intermediate level the drive has been extended 12 feet. The reef looks very well and shows colours of gold. New Manukau. — The block on Mulligan's leader is now finished, and driving on &aine and at No. 4 level is now in hand. A little quartz 13 making in the back of the drive, so that the leader may make any day now. The country is good, so it is hoped to report gold in the block before long. The dirt being crushed is shaping well. Thames Prospecting Claim. — A cablegram was received by Mr Crawford yesterday from Sydney authorising him to call at once for tenders for sinking the main shaft. The site chosen is some distance up the gully above the Waiokaraka reservoir, and the first contract let will bo for 100 feet. New Alburnia. — The contractors have extended the crosscut 10ft. through hard sandstone, showing the quartz 4ft. at bottom and 3ft. at top of drive. The bangingwall stone looks more favourable than the footwall. A change ot country is coming in the left hand side of the drive. It looks like the wall of another reef. The reef will be surveyed to-morrow. Clime and party have obtained 470z. of retorted gold from 27 loads from the Star of South reef. Saxon. — No. 1 reef is now nearly all broken down to the winze. It still averages about 5 feet, carrying splendid indications, and gold is frequently seen. The reef on the hillward side is 18 inches thick, and colours of gold were freely seen when breaking down on Saturday. Good progress is being made in other parts of the mine. Cambria. — The crosscut, No. 4 level, is in 60 feet. The two leaders are still being carried along. The one on the western side of the reef is 9 inches thick and the other about 4. Both show gold occasionally. In the leading sbope eastward the two leaders have junctioned and are now 1 foot thick. May Queen. — The contractors are making good progress in cleaning and timbering the shaft.
