NEW DISEASE IN HORSES AND CATTLE.

RjEi-\i:ii.RiN'j to the disease in horses and cattle, mentioned in la&t month's Notes and Gleanings, page 69, •' Ramarama" writes to us as follows :—: — "A neighbour has had a lot of his cows bad Vyibh What he" called rheumatism". Some of them died, others were very thin and Lad when I saw them. I suggested ergot might be the cause. He said, "What about all so and so's , cows ; and so and co's ? They are just the same," and he mentioned several 'settlers in the surrounding district who were losing cows with the same complaint. I understood him that ono farmer in JNlangere was suffering and that nobody knew what was the cause. May not this be the same a& the Oroti River district complaint? It is not infectious, as my informant had bought a cow or two and turned them in with the- others, and they kept all right." It is, of course, impos&ible to express an opinion as to what the disease id which ails the cows referred to by our correspondent, as beyond the fact that some have died and others are ' ' very thin and bad"— a common effect of sickness of any kind — the symptoms of the disease ' these cattlo are "suffering from arc not described. When eigot does anything more than produce simple abortion, there are well marked symptoms to be noted, tuch as gangrone of the "extremities in bad cases. Any cases of mysterious disease amongst cattle should be roported to the cattle inspect-or ter proper investigation.
