Pakeha won the St. Kilda (Melbourne) Gup. He put down an odds on favourite in Recall. Lonsdale is being prepared for the A. J.G Meeting at the Hon. W. A. Long's private training track near Sydney. The nominations of Kingfish, T3ustle, and Tartar for the various events of the A. J.C. Autumn Meeting were received too late. Hickenbotham has every hope of getting Mentor, the last Melbourne Cup winner, to the post again. Kaipai, a full brother to Capella, won the two pony races at the Napier Park meeting. E. Power, the Victorian jockey, meditates a trip to England. Sanders has already left. The Dunedin Jockey Club tried three starters at their recent Anniversary Meeting, and a Mr Grindley gave most satisfaction. All of the Hon. J. White's horses are performing satisfactory work at Randwick. Abercorn should be hard to beat in ths Gold Cup. Mr Baker, the owner of Somnus, has been offered a guarantee from Napier breeders to stand the son of Hammock in that district next season. Mr S. P. Gollan, the owner of Jet d'Eau, was the recipient of a very hostile demonstration as his horse returned to scale after winning the Waverley Stakes, the concluding event of the Napier Park Meeting. A two - days' horse-taming contest has just taken place at Wanganui between Professors Hickton and Lichtwark, of Normanby. It was for £20 a-side and the championship of New Zealand. Tho result was that the stakes and the championship were awarded to Professor Lichtwark, his system being considered tho more humane of the two. Russley is now under F. McNamaras charge at Flemington. It is more than likely that he will take part in the Australian Jockey Club's meeting. Manton ia among theßawkesbury Handicap acceptors. He is now top weight with Bst. 12lb. Clogs and Miss Alice have also paid-up. Cynisca's win in the Nursery Plate at Hawke's Bay was her seventh successive victory, and brought the amount of her winnings up to £1,123 17s 6d. No entries for the N.Z. Cup were received by the Secretary of the C. J.C. from Melbourne, and the list therefore remains at 54. A cable message received in Sydney states that the Ausfcralian-bred horse Ringmaster was a competitor on the opening day of the Lincoln (Eng.) race meeting, but finished out of a place. M. Carmody added to his recent successes at Midland (Tasmania) Races lately by annexing the two leading events with Chandler and Silvermere. R. Kidd had the mount on each occasion. Corrigan has parted friends with Mr M. Loughlin.for whom he hadridden for a great number of years. The great cross-country horseman intends starting as a trainer near Melbourne. The Committee of the Australian Jockey Club has; it is said, decided not to adopt disqualifications made at pony and galloway meetings, on the grounds that such races do not come within their rules. The ' Sydney "Sunday Times" Bays:— New Zealand 'should be the proudest colony of the Australias as a horse producer. With Carbine and Lochiel, to say nothing of those of older date, she can more than hold her own.
Mr C. Beresford received £237 10s for his successes at the Napier Park Meeting. Messrs Stock and Conroy were the next on the list with £171. During the two days of the meeting the machine put through £10,305. This is the biggest total yet recorded for a Park gathering. The Dunedin horse Captain Cook, haR been purchased by Mr Hungerford of the West Coast, for £200. He was brought over from Tasmania as a yearling in 1884, and was bought for 95 gunies. Since then he has won thirteen out of thirby-five races, and earned over £1,000. The death is announced at Feilding of the brood mare Policy, belonging to Mr D. Scott. Policy was bred as far back as 1862, and was by Potentate out of Eleber, by Emilius — Emily, by Operator — Flora Mclvor, by Emigrant ; Potentate being by Sir Hercules out of Princess, by Gratis. At the last < Canterbury Park (Sydney) races Fernandez won the principal event — the Croydon Handicap— for which Aberdeen was made a warm favourite. The half-brother to Morpeth, however, had to put up with second honours, old Here's Luck bein? third.
