ONEHUNGA RACING CLUB.
(To the Sporting Editor.) Sik, — I feel constrained to call your at tention to the utter want of regard for the safety of the jockeys and horses shown by the stewards of the Onehunga Racing Club, on Saturday last, in placing the event of the hurdle race la^t on a very long programme of seven events. They were> warned beforehand to have this race run earlier in fche day, but the advice was disregarded. We all know that even in daylight there is greater danger of accidents attending steeplechases or hurdle races than Hat races ; but when they are run absolutely in dark, as whs the case on Saturday, the danger is enoimously increased. There was absolutely no excuse for the action. It was carelessness and want of ordinary foresight, to say the least of it. Had fatal accidents resulted, the stewards would have been morally liable As it was, one poor jockey, the rider of Governess, got thrown and severely hurt, and would, in all probability, have been killed, had it not been for the manly conduct of the jockey, Hadfield (the rider of Emblem), who riding just behind Governess at the last hurdle, swerved hit* horse to avoid jumping on Governess and his rider when the former fell, thereby giving Pica the chance to pass him and appropriate the race. All honour to the jockey. — I am, etc., "Lover, oi? Spokt Witeodt Needless Danger "
