(To the Editor of the Draughts Column). The following position occurs in the Ayrshire Lassie game that appeared in your column on Saturday la«t. as playsd by G. Wilson and C. Gunthorp, and was drawn. I give it, as a nice little problem, black to move and win. — W.C. Positions: Black men on 1, 2, kings on 7 32 ; white men on 12, 21, kings on 8, 14.
DRAUGHTS ITEMS. Players of draughts will be interested to know that books bearing on " the silent, .yanie" can be obtained in Auckland from Air W\ E. Hears?. Among the books now in stock ar^ Goulds collection of problems, and the new book on draughts by Robert McCulloch, of Qlasgow. A copy of the latter work has been forwarded to us by Mr Mears, and it proves to be a very recent publication, bavins* been issued only last year. It contains the laws of the game, full descriptions of play, seventeen different openings, with 759 variations. A number ot problems and critical positions are also given, ard in .short, the book, which costs 2«, is a complete guide to the game.
