Royal Horticultural Society.

The above- Society held their usual autumn show on Friday and Saturday last week. The display of pot plants, fruit, flowers and vegetables was in many respects much better than at some former exhibitions. Some of the exhibitors must have gone to considerable trouble and expense in being able to stage the different articles in the condition they did, and I am sorry that all the trouble and expense they go to is so little appreciated by the public. To carry on a horticul tural society puch as the Auckland Society should be, considerable means are required, and those have not been forthcoming in the past. It is a strange matter that in Auckland one horticultural society after another has been formed with the nsult that after a few years they have to give it best for the want of sufficient encouragement to carry it on. In small outside districts they can hold their annual meeting, and nearly everyone in the district will take an interest and do their best to bring about a successful exhibition. Now, the Auckland Society, from the number of horticulturists in the immediate district, should be the leading society in the province, giving assistance and helping the smaller country societies ; but instead of this, from vadous causes, the different societies in Auckland have always had a hard struggle for existence. If it is not possible for horticulturists to create a better interest, it would almost be better to stop holding exhibitions. There is one matter which I have heard mooted during the last week, and that is for the Parnell, Epsom, Remuora, and Newmarket residents to form a society with the headquarters at Newmarket. Some of those interested think that less expensive and better exhibitions could be got up there. At the same time, these exhibitions would be held in the centre of the people who give more attention to horticultural matters, and the attendance, from this cause, would be much better. Now, I would not like to see exhibitions altogether dropped in Auckland, but I think the above f idea of starting the new society in Newmarket a good one, as it would in time help to strengthen some stronger combination which must be raised up to con£inue a society in Auckland, as it seems the present society is not equal to enlisting public sympathy in their labours., In conclusion I think horticulturists should thank Mr A. E. Dewes for the time and trouble, etc., he has taken in promoting the last exhibition. It would be better, for horticulture if Auckland possesed^ more amateurs animated with the same spirit,
