Ihames, Monday* The improvement in mining continues, ample evidence of which is affor 'ed by the amount of business daily transacted on Change in mining stock. The Saxon mine is looking well throughout, and colours and dabs of gold are frequently 9<?en in the quarts coming to hand from tho various stopps above Nos. 4 and 2 levels. The usual fortnightly cleaning up and retorting took place on Saturday for the excellent return of 3970zs gold from 320 loads'of quartz and 35lbs of picked stone. There are now between 65 and 70 men en\ployed in this Company's mine &)n\ battery. The Waiotahi Company, which enjp ploys a staff of 50 men, also continues^), produce quartz of excellent grade, ~o\] the present month's operations shoiili!,, judging by the show of amalgam on ths plates at the battery, lea?e a good margin; of profit. Thames Mining and Prospecting Col ; As mentioned in a previous issuo operations were recently started on behalf of the Sydney syndicate, owner of th'o ground, by cleaning out a low level drive at the Collarborne. Mr Crawford, However, who is supervising operations. ha.a now received another cablegram fronx Sydney instructing him to proceed 'with the sinking of a main shaft from which to carry on operatione on an extensive scale, and this work will be commence 1 d either to-day or to-morrow. Mny Queen : The shaft is down, and the contractors are now 'njjjjupgmuch better progress. -J^V .' Trenton : The shaft having attained the requisite depth, a chamber Is being formed, and as Sov>n as.'Vlu's is finished, driving will be started to intersect the Saxon main reef. Lone Hand : Mr H. W, Moore has been appointed manager of this Com-, pany's mine, which was reoently floated in Auckland, and work is to be started forthwith.
