This was the surprise of the day, Salisbury being hardly mentioned in the betting, Leopold and Audacity being warm favourites. Foxton entered the straight with a slight lead from Cupid, who had Salisbury at his girths. The v hips were now out on all, and Salisbury, struggling on, gained inch by inch on the leader, and eventually wore him down, winning on the post by a bare head, Cupid half a length away, third.
