MINING NEWS. Thames, March 26.
Saxon. — The mine manager reports :—: — No. 5 or new level : The work in progress at this level at present is extending the drive seaward, of cross-cut towards the point where the winze being sunk from No. 4 will meet the same. This drive has now been driven in this direction 10 feet. At tirst I intended to have continued the drive along the course of the hanging wall of the 2ft reef, but this reef is still keeping about the same distance away from the main reef, still leaving the horse of sandstone of 2 to 3ft between the two bodies of quartz. Therefore, I am at pi'esenc carrying the horse of sandstone and the 2ft reef with the drive. In breaking down four feec of the 2ft reef to-day, it continued to show fair minerals, although no gold was seen. The winze being sunk from No. 4 level baa now reached a depth of 60 feet below No. 4 level, and is now being sunk more in the hanging wall side of the reef, and in the same bar of sandstone and stringers that the drive at No. sis in. If the gas does not interfere with the progress of this work, we shall have the connection completed early next week. Stopes : On footwall reef above No. 2 level the stopes in progress are Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. No. 1 sbope has been carried to the boundary and No. 6 justj ust commenced. All these stopes are continuing to turn out a good supply of payable quartz. On the hanging wall reef the stopes in progress are Nos. 4, 5, and 6. From these a lair supply of heavily mineralised quartz is also coming to hand with occasionally a few pounds of picked stone. During the week 175 loads of quartz has been crushed at the Company's battery. Amalgam on hand, from same, 4210z ; picked stoneon hand, 201b.
Cambria. — The mine manager reports :—: — The winze on the leader in the cross-cut at No. 3 level, Darwin section of the mine is down a depth of 44 feet. Dabs and colours of gold were seen through the quartz when breaking down the leaders. The cross-cut at No. 4 level Darwin section of the mine is I now in a distance of 28 feet. A leader 3 inches in thickness was cut in this drive on Thursday last. When breaking it down, dabs and colours of gold were seen freely through the quartz. There are a number of stringers crossing the face of the drive, and the country is everything that could be desired for gold. Six men are "still employed breaking out quartz on the hangingwall leader, between Nos. 2 and3 levels. Colours of gold were seen when breaking down the leader. The battery is now running two shifts on public crushing. The battery and winding engine are in good working order. May Qubest. — The mine manager reports: The contractors have found the site of the City of York shaft, which is nearer the county water-race than was at first anticipated. Now that they have got the shaft I the contractors will make good progress [ with the cleaning and re-timbering of the shaft.
New Manukau. — The mine manager reports :—": — " The dirt coming to hand from the stopes on Mulligan's leader is improving, owing to the block getting well up to No. 3 level, there being only a 3tope and a half to take out. Gold was seen treely last week, and 201b of fair picked stone saved. I have on hand now 501b. When this block is finished, I have a small block ready to put the hands on in No. 5 level, an old winze leader, which will be taken out together, and which I think will prove good payable dirt, with a chance of getting a patch out of one of the two lodes."
New Moanatairi.^— The mine manager reports : — The lead on the winze was again broken down to-day. It is similar in size and appearance, and showed some good colours of gold. There is no change at No* 4 level. Several of the tribute parties have given up the blocks, viz. , Ellis, Hamilton* Childerhous, and Noonan. Thames, March 27.
Saxon. — As stated in a telegram in your last issue, another breaking-down of the two-feet reef took place at No. 5 level on Monday, but no gold was then observed in the quartz. The drive is how being driven in the sandstone between this and the main lode, and is in a distance of ten feet. The latter is noc being taken down, but the twofeet reef is being carried with the drive and broken as it goes along. The quartz is of a kindly appearance. There is no change to report from the various other workings. During the past week 175 loads of quartz have been crushed for 421 ounces amalgam. There are 201b of picked stone on hand.
Trenton. — The tender of James Roy croft •and party, at £16 for excavating the chamber, and £1 9s 6d for driving 50 feet,. has been accepted, and the contractor* have started work.
