DUTY ON SACCHARINE. Dunedin, March 13.
At a meeting of Kempthorne , Prosser and Co., the Chairman said that) at the time of he new tariti they had an existing contract with patentees of saccharine to take ceitain quantities within a given time tor New Zealand, and they had also similar clote contracts with other fhins for mapped out sections of the world, and no one contractor could inter! ere with any other, or sell beyond defined territory. This contract had only partially expired when the Go\ernment, under their new taiift", imposed a duty of 5s per ounce, or 80s per lb., on this article, thus prohibiting importation, and completely destroying the sale. They had spent large puma of money in adveitieing the article, and have now large stocks in hand which they can neither take out on account of the duty, nor can they export it under their contiact. The reason given by Government for the imposition of this extraordinary, duty was ihat ifc was absolutely necessary to do so to protect the revenue derivable from sugar. The whole subject was brought under the notice of the Premier when the taiilf was passed, and he promised to go carefully into the matter as soon as the House broke up. The Chai man regrttted to say that nothing definite had yefc been done, but the matter was again brought befoie the Premier when last in Dunedin, and he admitted they had an equitable claim.
