OUR GOLDFIELDS A NEW DISCOVERY. Thames, March 14.
j Fok some time past Messrs Harcourb and Bennett have been engaged tracing a lead of graphite at Tararu, and have brought several specimens of the bbuff into town. The love, which is about 18 inches in thickness, is of a friable nature, and has been braced on the surface for a distance of about bah a mile. An area of 80 aces has been pegged out, and an application fora mineral lease made to the Warden, the first, J. believe, under the new Mining Act, in the colony. The owners are sanguine as to the importance of their discovery, and are hopeful of establishing a local industry "of some consequence in our midst, as several tests made ye -tei day proved very satisfactory. The market priceof plumbago, which is more generally known as black lead, is from £25 to £30 per ton. Further tests are to ba made in the course of the next few days, the result of which will be looked forward to with some interest.
Cambkia. — The crosscut started at No. 4 level for the purpose of getting underneath the winze now being sunk from No. 3 level, h.°.s boon advanced 4 or sft. A distance ci4o or 50lt will requiie to be driven to reach the winze, and as soon as communication is ettected, stoping will be started upon the leaders. The winze has attained a depth of 36ft., and colours of gold continue to be ireely seen when breaking down both leaders in the botcom. The crosscutabNo 3 level has been suspended for th« present, as the men have been re- ! moved to No. 4 level.
Saxon. — The quartz cub in the drive ab No. 5 level has now been passed bluough and proves to be only 8 inches in thickness, so it is thought that alter all it is nob the main reef. The dtive is being pushed ahead.
Sylvia (Tararu). — In consequence of the large volume oi water issuing irom the surface of the face of the drive, the work of cutting through the leef cannot be staited for a lew day**.
Trknton. — 1b has been decided to extend the Uambna No. 4 level crosscut, the mine manager having recommended that ■ such suould be done.
