PROSPECTIVE GRAIN VALUES.
A correspondent writes :—: — The future of grain prices ia just now much discussed by farmers, and ib is to be feared they have extravagint ideas on the bubject, as 5s per bushel for wheat, and 4s. for oats are expected to be about the standard for the products of the present' harvest. Several estimates of British and Europoati requirements have alieady been published, but as the subject is an important one to farmers, I forward the following table and comments from JSrudstreets, an acknowledged statistical authority. "The world as a whole has Wheat sufficient for the world's consumption in 18S8-89, bub on a higher plane of prices. The price may become ppeculative, may be carried too high, higher than the situation warrants, in which cases there will be leaction3. From the information in hand it nppeais true that wheat supplies will be po much smaller than usual, and that the reserves will be ?o much depleted as tn warrant an advance in values. The higher freights ruling will be n factor ia bringing about this result.
" But these estimates, both supplier avid requirements, may need considerable mollification. Any very considerable advance in the price would neces?ai"ly diminish consumption, as greater economy would be exercised, v hich would leave no real deficiency. It may be safely stated that there will be no whent famine in the world during 1888-89. "' These remarks will afford some information to our farmers as to what they may look for in the way of prices in 1889.
