The inquest on the body of John Pennell, the young lad (about seventeen years of age), who was killed on Monday by. his horse falling on him while in the act of jumping a hurdle, was held on Wednesday afternoon at the house of Mr J. Phillips'. Messrs Ehodes, Vuglar, Tetley, Spry, Campbell, and Fogie, were empannelled as a jury, Mr Rhodes being foreman Constable Mitchell conducted the enquiry, and Mr Nepean Kenny, J.P., was actingOoroner The evidence of Alfred Lockwood and Frank Mahoney, two lads who wore with deceased at the time of the sad 1 accident occurred, was to the effect that death was canned by the horse baulking at the hurdle which deceased rode it at, thethe hor^e, fell on deceased crushing him badly, * Mr W. J. Elliolfc also stated that this was the version that the ladf had given him of the affair, when on his death bed. Tt appears that the boy«, in imitation of their elders, were getting up a race meeting which was to have come ofl: on Easter Monday, and had been training their horses for the event for some time past. I may add that the boys have appropriated the money collected for their races (some £3 or £4), for the purpose of erecting ft h-adstone at the grave aE their late comrade. The Ld was universally liked,, and much sympathy is felt for hi i parents, [ie had only recently insured his life for £100, The holders of the 50 acre agricultural sections within the gold field have received: formal notice that their sections will not be j» ranted free of ca-t as required, but that the sum of: 5s per acre will be charged, for the fee simple, and further, that only those who owe no arrears oH rent will beallowed to buy. At Waihi there are at present on!y four men on the W.iihi G.M. Co.'s works, but additions are to be immediately made to the plant, and a number ot hands will shordy be put on. At Owharoa, Fanner and party have commenced crushing. There is nothing else worth mentioning in mining.
