NEW RAILWAY TIME-TABLE-CONCESSIONS TO COUNTRY SETTLERS.

A new time-table comes into force on Monday next, March 11th. The alterations are important and numerous. The principal feature is provision for a passenger train to and from Hamilton. This train will have connection with the various blanches. The up train will leave Auckland at 9.35 a.m., and the down train will reach Auckland at 2.30p m. The 6.20 a.m. and 11.40 a.m. trains from Auckland, and tho 11.30 a.m. from Mercer and 5 25 p.m. from Huntly are cancelled, whilst a new train leaves Auckland at 5 a.m. for Huntly, and returns from Huntly at 2.15 p.m. to Auckland. The latter trains will form the goods service for the main line. Special goods trains, by which passengers may travel, leave Auckland on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 6.35 a.m. for Huntly and beyond. Special cattle trains leave Frankton Junction every Monday and Wednesday. These trains will run right through to Green Lane and Remuera, and will afford an express cattle service convenient to the weekly sales. Alterations have also been gazetted affecting the rates charged for farm produce. These consist of reductions and concessions made consequent upon tho representations made to Mr Commissioner Maxwell during his late visit to this district. The request for cheap rates for small lots of farm produce has been acceded to. The small settler can now forward agricultural produce, fruit, poultry, butter, eggs, honey, beeswax, game, rabbits, cheese, fish, bacon, hams, meat, bread, seeds, vegetables, plants and shrubs, at specially law rates, in lots of 281b, 561b, 841 band 1121b. To give an instance— Fruit can be sent from Hamilton, Cambridge and Te Awamutu to Auckland 281b for Is 2d, and this charge includes cartage for one mile in Auckland ; 561b cost Is 5d and Is 7d ; 841b, Is 9d and Is lid. The minimum quantity for tonnage rates Class E, has been reduced to one and a-half tons, but smaller lots can be sent at rate and a-half. For instance : The Te Awa mutu settler can now send to Auckland a mixed lot of potatoes, game, flour, etc., weighing a-quarter of a ton, for which the charge now is 5s 6d, including delivery by cart for one mile. With the fast daily train service now provided, and the above concessions re freight, a great impetus should be given to the small settler, who will be able to forward the product of his labour advantageously and frequently to any likely market at small cost.

The amount spent on intoxicating drink in Ireland for the year 1887-88 was £11,041,588.
